“A brave, New Children’s book” reads the review from Embracing Imperfect.com.
Today, I was taking a look back on the beginings of Tangerine, Spark and Rainbow’s Story. It’s debut to the world! I was overwhelmed with gratitude when I received one of my very first reviews from Gina the blogger of Embrace Imperfection.com. Although I have not had the opportunity to meet her, I am moved she took the time to read Tangerine, Spark, and Rainbow’s story giving it a honest review of this tale, which I hold dear to my heart and my work with children of all ages. I found her words encouraging and fair. She celebrated the art work in the book and took the time to understand my intention. This gesture was appreciated, because of the incredible time and effort it took to produce a book, such as this, during a time when computer technology was absolutely NOT what it is today. I remember speaking with a person who was in charge of book sales/editing for a rather large well-known book distributing company and on his way to develop his own book publishing company! His words “Deb, what you did with this book is something whole departments work to do…you did this all by yourself.” He seemed impressed- I just didn’t know any better at the time, my answer was yes, but ignorance was bliss, things would have progressed faster with help, lets just say I learned tons!!! I was extremely slow in my process, having three small children and extremely full life…working in the studio after they would go to bed, a hour there…three hours here. I do agree this book does have lots of words..large ones and small ones, which was my intention. I wanted to encourage children to ask to understand…to encourage their curiosity. “What the Heck does that mean?! and let them see their parents or care givers would encourage their questions. I wanted children all ages to embrace the themes, grow into them, and to learn from their experience of the book. Gina was realistic to say, the younger aged children, she found the art alone able to captivate her children and for that I am completely grateful. Art regardless of words is transformative. It all just gives another perspective! She inspired me to continue working to help children see their own potential and make their MARK with a SPARK! On this Throw back Thursday-Gina, thank you for sharing your thoughts and encouraging others to take a interest my book! I enjoy reading your blog as well! Many Blessings!!!!
